Would you believe me if I told you the adorable Korean girl pictured above is capable of speed-rapping like no other Korean female MC? As one music official had stated in the midst of her debut last year, "She has shown really shocking capabilities. It is her charm to have such a pretty, and cute image but she raps with a malicious tongue." There's something about hearing a sick rap coming from the mouth of a seemingly living Sanrio character that fascinates me. But you know that already.
E.via emerged from the underground to attempt a mainstream debut last year with Hey! Unfortunately, the television music programs found a track off of her EP, E.via a.k.a. Happy E.vil, too offensive to be advertised and banned her from performing any of her music, including her title track Hey! (that is clean). The track in question, Oppa (Big Brother) Can I Do It?, opens with E.via sensually pleading "Oppa…you know…I really want to do it…Can’t I do it once? Oppa…Can I do it?" I guess the Korean media refuses to accept the possibility of their women giving head. Anyway, I was bummed that I wouldn't be seeing her on any of the weekly music shows, but I wasn't too crazy about Hey! so I forgot about her up until her most recent single, Shake!, dropped this week. It's been noted that it sounds an awful lot like Pitbull's Hotel Room Service. There's been an outbreak of plagiarism cases lately in the KPop world, so for E.via's sake I hope the tracks are different enough to avoid trouble. In any case, I enjoy both songs.
Even this music video is under scrutiny for what Koreans may deem as "overt depictions of sexuality", which is ridiculous seeing as how the women in her video are completely flat in both regions of...general interest. What is there to sexualize? (Not that you need big tittays and azz to be sexualized.. Whatever, it's a joke, lighten up.)Her company is in the process of making a safe for work version of the video, if that's possible. I do like how E.via hired backup dancers instead of stripping down herself, as many female rappers seem pressured to do after a while. Let the dancers slang the ass, and the rapper keep the flow in check.
I recommend her full EP, and the recently released Must Have Mini Album. It's tough out there for a female MC, and they're even more few and far between in Korea, so I'm backing this girl. She can do it for oppa (I couldn't help myself).
