I attended a midnight showing of Nobuhiko Obayashi's Hausu over the weekend. To briefly sum up the experience, it was like watching a horror flick as seen through the eyes of an acid-dropping Hayao Miyazaki. The haunted house plot line is no different than that of a standard Scooby Doo episode. A girl invites a few of her friends to spend the Summer at an aunt's house, which is *gasp* haunted. There's Japanese schoolgirls (with names like Gorgeous, Kung-Fu, and Professor), demon cats, and possessed pianos with a thirst for blood. What more could you ask for? The trailer is here. Also, please check out fourfour's review of Hausu, where he's graciously captured some of it's crazy in gif-form.
On a somewhat related note, I think I've overcome my aversion of going to the movies solo. No one wanted to see Hausu with me so I went alone. I missed out on a lot of movies last year because I didn't want to risk looking like a loner sitting by myself but I'll be damned if I let that happen again. Power to the solo moviegoer!
