I saw two movies this weekend, Ponyo and District 9. I'm sure you can guess which one I preferred, although District 9 wasn't too bad. Ponyo was awesome. The animation and attention to detail was on point, but I expect nothing less from a Miyazaki film. It's the first film of his that I've had the chance to see on the big screen. Unfortunately, many speculate that this could the last Studio Ghibli film that he directs. Anyway, I was glad to see a good amount of children in the audience as well, because it is a kid's movie after all. Usually I frown upon talking during the movie, but it was cute hearing them yell and gasp at the screen throughout the movie (more often than not I was jumping along with them).
District 9 was entertaining for an alien flick. Everyone in the audience was really into it, clapping and cheering, etc. The crowd at the Vista are generally a rowdy bunch though. I can't write too much without spoiling the plot. It was so campy at parts that it felt more like a spoof of an alien movie. I expect a sequel and a cult following for District 9. Fun movie, wear it with jeans.

i had the chance to see district 9 this weekend and i thought it was great..actually didnt think it was campy or exaggerated at all..what did you mean by wearing it (or watching it?) with jeans?
Oh, don't get me wrong. I thought it was great as well, but some of it did register on the camp scale. e.g. The part where Christopher the alien is subtitled as saying "shit" when he accidently shoots that human. News stations suspecting that Wikus had sex with the prawns (and the resulting teary phone call from his wife). Everyone was laughing at those parts. I dunno, maybe it's just me..
Oh and the "wear it with jeans" comment is an Amy Sedaris quote from one of her Letterman appearances. I didn't really expect anyone to get that.
oh yeah now that you say that, it does seem a bit camp
but i'm still looking forward to seeing ponyo. it's already up on online but i can't understand japanese :{
ok i saw it in theatres. i paid almost $12 for something i could have seen for free but whatever!
