Korean pop music is probably the last genre of music I would've thought I'd be interested in. What follows is a run-down of some songs that have been steadily approaching my iPod's "Top 25 Most Played" playlist. Don't be mislead into thinking that this list is my opinion on what's what in the world of KPop, it's probably far from it. But in the words of a fellow Wonderful over at Spectacle, "I'll look up the earlier, more quality artists when I'm older, I only get to be a fan[boy] once." Let's begin with the group that started it all for me:
The Wonder Girls remake of "Now."
This isn't an official single for the Wonder Girls, the song/music video was made for the promotion of the KTF Ever X-Slim cellphone brand. Although I believe the song would've have done well for itself on the charts had it been released as a single, seeing as how it's garnered so much attention on the Internet, and even surpassed the original in popularity. Yoobin's rap towards the end largely contributes to this song's existence on this list.
Big Bang's "Lollipop" featuring 2NE1
I really didn't care for this song at first, and to some extent I still don't. It's annoying, and repetitive to the point of tearing your hair out. "Lolli lolli lolli-pop Oh neon naui lollipop" is chanted in the first chorus of the song by up-and-coming girl group 2NE1, but aside from that they don't bring much else to the song. They have yet to release something on their own, so I'll save my judgement of them until then.
SNSD's "Gee" [Aliks Club Remix]
SNSD (So Nyeo Shi Dae) is widely considered as the Wonder Girls' rival. That being said, I feel like I'm supposed to inherently hate them. In actuality, my feelings for them could be best described as indifferent. Their songs are okay, but their member count is intimidating and makes them distant for me. When I first saw them my first thought was "Why the fuck are there so many?" I mean really, that's a lot of girls dancing around on one stage. I have a hard enough time trying to focus on the five members of WG. Anyway, I liked the original enough to put on my iPod, but Aliks' remix makes it infinitely better. I believe it samples some from Lady Gaga's "Poker Face."
Kara's "Honey" [Aliks Remix]
This is another one of Aliks' remixes, and again I prefer his to the original. The song by itself is almost a stereotype of what Asian pop music is supposed to sound like, what with it's engrish-y interlude and cutesy accompanying dance moves. But the remix really amps it up and makes the song more suitable for a DDR track. Kara is cute enough I guess, but there's only enough space for one Korean girl group on this blog.
Have you noticed anything similar between these songs yet? Their upbeat, peppy, repetitive nature perhaps? They all have a way of seeping into your head, which is probably the goal of their respective producers.
GEE GEE GEE GEE BABY BABY BABY!
Good luck getting that out of your head!
