Booiinngg...Twannngg...Oooweee!

In case you're wondering about this post's title, that's supposed to be the haunting, and alluring sound of the theremin. I had never heard of the theremin before last night, when I watched this cat playing with one (link):
That cat doesn't look real does it? I like the look the other cat gives the camera at the end. But anyway, yeah, the theremin. So I watched that video and looked for other videos on YouTube featuring the theremin, and immediately became obsessed. Apparently, the theremin is one of the earliest electronic musical instruments, and is considered to be a classical instrument. The one that cat is playing with is a simple, mini theremin, and like most things, there are more elaborate ones. Here's a smattering of Youtube videos starring the theremin:

1. This guy is probably the most popular theremin player on YouTube. Check out his channel and you'll see, theremins are his LIFE.
2. Here's a (much!) older video featuring noted thereminist Dr. Samuel Hoffman. On Wikipedia it says he was referred to as "doctor" because he was also a podiatrist..
3. A classical take on the theremin.
4. And lastly, there's this guy. AWESOME.
If you're like myself, and immediately thought about getting one, forget about getting anything as nice as the ones in the videos, they are extremely expensive, well, for me at least. I have a feeling that the little plastic one the cat is playing with in the first video shouldn't be too bad. Even if I had the money, I doubt I'd be interested in it for more than a couple hours though. I read somewhere that not many people in the world can really play the theremin to it's full capability, so there's something to be said for those who can. Oh well, I can always pretend. Oooiinngg, squeeeeeeing, twaiiiinnn!
